What is Coronary Angioplasty ?

Coronary Angioplasty

Coronary Angioplasty is a procedure performed on patients with coronary artery disease, a condition marked by the narrowing or clogging of the coronary artery, i.e. the major artery for supplying blood to the Heart Muscle. Coronary Artery disease is one of the most common cardiovascular conditions affecting people across the globe. It is often linked to the build-up of plaque, which accumulates over time, resulting in severe blockage.

Also referred to as ischemic heart disease, the condition prevents nutrient-rich blood from reaching the heart muscles, Coronary angioplasty follows a minimally invasive approach to clear the blockage. In some cases, the doctors may place a stent within the affected artery to make sure the blockage does not return in the future.

The most common procedures performed under interventional cardiology is coronary artery (heart) angioplasty and stent placement. Angioplasty price at Artemis Heart Care is too affordable.

It's important to know the difference between angiography and angioplasty here. Angiography is a procedure that uses X-rays to give doctors a very close-up view of blood vessels. During the angiography procedure, if the doctors find a narrowed portion of a blood vessel (stenosis), they may immediately stretch or widen it using an angioplasty.

Why does one need Coronary Angioplasty?

Coronary Angioplasty is needed to restore the flow of blood in patients with moderate to severe coronary artery disease. It is recommended by doctors when other treatment options like medication and lifestyle changes fail to work and the patient is at increased risk of complications due to the blockage. About Coronary Angioplasty Procedure

Preparation

  • The procedure starts with scheduling an appointment with our expert. A thorough assessment of your overall health will be done. Doctors will go through your medical history, perform a physical examination and ask questions related to your health.
  • This is followed by a number of tests, such as electrocardiogram, CT of the chest and X-ray, for detailed assessment, which plays a crucial role in determining the best course of treatment.
  • The procedure will be explained by your doctor in detail, to help you understand what happens during it and what follows. This is done to make sure that you are prepared for the procedure both physically and mentally.
  • If you are currently taking any medication or undergoing treatment for some other problem, it is important to make sure that your doctor is well aware of the same. You may be required to stop taking your medications temporarily or make recommended adjustments in the dosage.
  • You need to abstain from consuming any solids or liquids, for at least 6 to 8 hours prior to the surgery. This is done to make sure that you do not vomit or feel nauseated.

What does the Procedure involve?

  • The procedure can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours and is performed under the influence of sedatives and anaesthesia to make sure you do not feel any pain
  • Your vitals will be taken and an intravenous line will be started for administering fluids and medication. Small electrode patches will be placed on various areas of the chest to simultaneously assess your heartbeat
  • The site where the incision is to be made is prepared and a small incision is made to introduce the sheath. This helps to introduce the catheter into the body. It is a thin flexible tube that has a balloon fitted on one of its ends
  • A thin guidewire is used to direct and move the catheter towards the affected part of the artery using detailed imaging guidance
  • Once the catheter is in the right position, the balloon is inflated to open the collapsed arterial walls and clear the blockage. If the doctors feel the need, a stent may be placed in the artery, to make sure it does not close in the future
  • The balloon is deflated and carefully removed along with the catheter and sheath. The incision is then closed

What follows the Procedure?

  • After the procedure is done, you will be taken to the recovery room, where you will be thoroughly observed. After gaining consciousness, you will be taken to your own room
  • A nurse will be assigned to take care of you and make sure you get your medication and nutritional fluids on time. Our team will come to check on you from time to time
  • Your vitals will be assessed to make sure there are no complications, and an ultrasound may be performed if doctors feel the need
  • Generally, patients are discharged within a day or two, however, the actual time may vary depending on the severity of the patients condition
  • You will be given a set of guidelines related to your medication, diet and daily activity level. These are to be followed religiously
  • Regular follow-ups and visits are very crucial to ensure swift and hassle-free recovery
