What is Electrocardiogram?

Electrophysiology typically deals with the electrical properties of living cells and tissues that are responsible for regulating your heart rhythm. It involves various tests, that aim at diagnosing, assessing, treating and managing problems that interfere with the normal conductivity of your heart and disrupt its rhythm.

Electrophysiology is broadly classified into two types - Non-invasive and Clinical. The former generally involves modalities for diagnosing and assessing heart rhythm abnormalities, such as Holter monitoring and stress test, whereas the latter involves modalities for diagnosis, as well as treatment, such as Electrophysiology Studies, Pacemaker implantation and Radiofrequency ablation.

Electrophysiology Studies: EP test is a diagnostic modality that uses a catheterization technique to generate a detailed map of the heart's electrical pattern. This helps to determine the area from which the arrhythmia is originating, determine the best course of treatment, analyze the effectiveness of medication, assess potential risks and determine if the patient needs device implantation.
Radio Frequency Ablation for Supra Ventricular and Ventricular Tachyarrhythmia: Also known as fulguration, the technique utilizes heat for targeting areas from where the faulty electrical signals, that are responsible for the abnormal heart rhythms are originating. The procedure is typically performed for certain types of ventricular arrhythmias, such as supra-ventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmia.
Pacemaker Implantation: The procedure involves the implantation of a battery-powered device, known as a pacemaker, in the chest, to detect abnormal heart rhythms and regulate normal heart rhythm. Pacemaker implantation is one of the most common heart surgeries and is highly effective in helping patients with potentially serious arrhythmias.
ICD and Combo Device Implantation: This involves the implantation of a combo device, integrating an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and a pacemaker, for effectively managing complex arrhythmias. It is generally recommended for patients with heart failure, ventricular arrhythmias, non-ischemic cardiomyopathy and various inherited cardiac abnormalities.
