Heart Blockage

What is Heart Blockage?

Heart blockage happens when coronary arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood to your heart get blocked or narrowed by fat deposits (plaque). This condition is also referred to as coronary artery disease and can hinder the heart muscle from receiving blood, resulting in severe issues like angina, heart attack, or heart failure if left untreated.

The blockage is usually diagnosed by coronary angiography and might need to be treated with procedures such as angioplasty, stent implantation, or bypass surgery based on the location and severity of the blockage.

Why Does One Need Heart Blockage Treatment?

Treatment of heart blockage is necessary if there is serious narrowing or complete blockage in the coronary arteries that can disable the normal functioning of the heart. It can cause pain in the chest, shortness of breath, or even life-threatening conditions like myocardial infarction (heart attack). Successful treatment restores normal supply, prevents damage, and lessens the possibilities of future cardiac events.

About Heart Blockage Treatment in Panipat

Preparation

  • Assess symptoms and perform a complete physical exam.
  • Arrange painless tests like ECG, echocardiography, or angiography.
  • Perform blood tests and renal function tests for the test of compatibility with contrast dye or drug.
  • Describe the planned treatment in detail, risk, benefit, and post-procedure care.
  • Ask you to fast for several hours prior to the procedure if in case of angioplasty or stenting.

Go through your medications and may change or discontinue some medications like blood thinners prior to treatment.

What Is the Procedure Like?

  • You will be reclined and mild sedatives will be administered—general anesthesia is not typically needed.
  • A small cut will be made in either the groin (femoral artery) or wrist (radial artery).
  • A catheter will be passed to the site of blockage under imaging.
  • A contrast dye will be injected to identify the blockage.

If necessary, a balloon angioplasty will be done to open the artery and maybe stent placement to maintain the artery open.

For individuals who have severe or complex blockages, coronary bypass surgery may be advised.

What Happens After the Procedure?

  • You will be kept in a recovery room for few hours.
  • Most patients are allowed to ambulate within 6-12 hours after the procedure.
  • You can be discharged the same day or after overnight stay based on your condition.
  • Medications to avoid clotting and maintain heart function will be given.
  • Follow-ups, change of lifestyle, and cardiac rehabilitation can be prescribed for long-term management.
